Temple Beth-El Sisterhood 2016-2017

A Whirlwind Year

The Sisterhood continued its tradition of supporting Temple this year by providing financial support for Sunday School teachers and refreshments for students on Sundays, providing Oneg Shabbat each weekend, and maintaining the kitchen.  Through our affiliation with Women of Reform Judaism, we also contribute in serving Jewish and Humanitarian causes worldwide.

Our Sisterhood catering service worked with the families of Jacob Lutz, Sam Berebitsky, and Vaughn Hurdle as they celebrated becoming Bar Mitzvah this year.

Posi Tucker chaired the L’Havdil group.  This group provided treat bags to members who find it hard to get to Temple at Rosh Hashanah, Chanukah, and Purim holiday times.

Many events were planned by Sisterhood or supported by Sisterhood this year.  On the opening day of Sunday School parents and students were served bagels and beverages.  The Sisterhood Opening Luncheon was held in September.  A Farm to Table theme was used.  In October apples and honey were served after Rosh Hashanah services and a tour was taken of the Casaday Costume Collection.  Four members attended the WRJ Midwest  Convention held in Chicago October 27-30.  In December latkes were fried and served at a joyous Chanukah dinner organized by the Sisterhood.  In January, some members gathered at Sorin’s on the Notre Dame campus for brunch.  In February, Sisterhood took on a new event- a TuB’Shevat Sedar and Shabbat dinner was prepared and served to 80 guests.  In March, Sisterhood planned and led a Saturday morning service followed by a Kiddush lunch.  Rabbi Companez led a Learner’s Service on Friday, March24th for a Community Shabbat service in honor of educators.    The service was followed by a potluck dinner organized by Sisterhood.  A Women’s Seder was enjoyed by 28 women during Passover in April. Three members attended the Fried  WRJ Leadership Conference held this year in Charlotte, North Carolina.  A Mahjong/Social fundraiser was held in May which was open to the community.  The Sisterhood Candlelight Luncheon was held at Papa Vino’s Restaurant in May.  The Woman of the Year Award was presented to Jean Ketcham.  A Y.E.S. Fund Tea rounded out the year’s activities held at Temple in the beautiful Gan Simcha garden courtyard area. The Y.E.S. Fund is an initiative of WRJ which supports Youth, Education, and Special Projects for Jews worldwide.

The Sisterhood Board is currently working on another year of meaningful efforts and activities to Support Temple Beth-El in the coming year.
